When Should You Book Senior Pictures in Lancaster, PA?

If you’re a high school junior, or the parent of one, you might be wondering when you’re actually supposed to book senior pictures. While the answer may seem simple and you might be thinking, “I’ll book right before senior year begins,” the truth is that most seniors need to book earlier than they expect.

If you want the most flexibility with dates, seasons, and locations, the best time to book your senior session with a Lancaster PA senior photographer is late winter through spring of your junior year. I know that can feel early, especially when you are still in junior year and senior year feels far away, but it truly makes such a difference.

From my experience as a Lancaster PA senior picture photographer, senior pictures are most popular in the summer before senior year into early fall of the senior year. Flower field blooms, golden summer light, and warm fall foliage are all in high demand; the beautiful look of photos during this time is a big draw for clients to book during these months. Because of that demand, July through September fills the fastest on my calendar each year.

For the past several years, August has been my busiest month for Lancaster senior pictures, with September being a very close second. Like previous years, this past year I actually had to close my August calendar completely because I had no availability left. Once a month is fully booked, I cannot accept additional sessions.

My availability for sessions is intentionally limited. Between family vacations, other obligations, and homeschooling my kids, I only take on a certain number of senior sessions each month. This allows me to give each senior the time, energy, and attention they deserve. It also means that once those spots are gone, they are truly gone.

Most of my central PA senior photography clients choose the summer before senior year because schedules tend to be more flexible and it gives you time to receive your images before senior year officially begins. It is perfect for senior year social media posts, graduation announcements, and having your photos ready for anything senior year brings. Summer sessions offer flower fields, golden light, late sunsets, and even creek sessions if you want something fun and a little different. Fall sessions are stunning with rich color and cozy tones, but they are also part of the busiest stretch of the year, so those dates go quickly.

Another benefit of booking your senior pictures early is having time to actually prepare and enjoy the process. Instead of scrambling to pull everything together at the last minute, you have space to think through the details. Booking early means you can take your time planning outfits and even shop for something new if you want a look that feels special for your photos. You can try out different hairstyles or colors (though maybe avoid any major hair changes the week before your session), think about accessories, and decide if there are any props you’d like to bring that reflect your personality, hobbies, or interests.

It also gives us more time to choose the perfect location. Maybe you’re drawn to flower fields, love the idea of a creek session, want a downtown vibe, or have a location that feels personal to you. Planning ahead gives us time to find the spot that fits your vision. Most importantly, early planning helps you feel prepared instead of rushed. When everything is thought through ahead of time, your senior session becomes something you can look forward to instead of just another thing squeezed into an already busy schedule.

Senior year has a way of sneaking up on you. Between sports, homecoming, college applications, senior activities, and everything else that fills your calendar, it can feel full very quickly.
